ABC's of Decor

Welcome to Anthony Charles Interiors, where we believe in DESIGNING FOR THE PEOPLE, by creating functional & aspirational environments for our clients! In this blog post we are going to share some of our tips & guidelines for effectively adding decor to any of the rooms in your home. What follows are the guiding principles we have successfully utilized in past projects & our own home.

There is so much decor out in the market & it can easily be overwhelming on where to begin. First & foremost, remember the acronym F-L-O-P. This stands for...

- Foliage

- Literature

- Objects

- Picture Frames

This is the ideal combination of decor to balance any shelves or surface areas in your home. By honing in on these four categories, you will be able to search the market more quickly & effectively.

The second step is to strategically identify the colors & materials that are going to compliment your room. The pictures above are from a waterfront home located in League City, TX where we implemented a contemporary, coastal aesthetic.

We decided our color palette was going to be predominantly blues & whites with minor "pops" of bright yellow. In addition, we added elements of wood & accents of brushed gold to further enhance the presentation. With a focus on three colors, wood & antique brass, our search even became more focused & easy to accomplish.

We also intentionally incorporated a few literal coastal themed pieces of decor such as the piece of driftwood, living coral sculpture & whimsical fish figurines.

One other thing to keep in mind when shopping for your decor items is variety in scale. As you arrange the decor into your bookshelves or other surface area, it is important to follow the wavy line graphic above. It is most visually pleasing to our eyes to follow this flow of up and down. We don't think there is specific scientific data out there on this. It just is more visually pleasing. Trust us! And lastly, we highly recommend leaving some proportional "breathing room" between the decor. It provides for a more tightly edited, aesthetically pleasing presentation.

When shopping for decor don't be afraid to play the high-low game. Balance impressive, show-stopper pieces with more cost effective options from places like Wayfair & Target. Also, we highly recommend "Books By The Foot" (www.booksbythefoot.com) for the literature portion of F-L-O-P. They have various color combinations for you to choose from & books can also function as risers to help you play with scale.

Well there you have it. We hope this post was insightful & now you are equipped to add the finishing touches to your home.
